Here we are at the end of The Sound and the Fury, and what have we learned? What has happened? What were we supposed to get out of all of this? I found the ending quite interesting. The last part of this book was from Dilsey’s point of view; however, it was not him narrating the story. Honestly, not a whole lot really happened in this part. It was Easter Sunday, and they went to church. After church Luster was driving to the graveyard, and decided to go the wrong way around the monument. This sends Benjy into another episode. Why does he do this? Benjy’s lifestyle is very orderly. He likes things done the way they’re supposed to be done. He needs things done the way he is used to it. When something happens out of order, he is completely thrown off, and he is sent into another episode. As soon as Luster corrects himself in his direction, Benjy is yet again satisfied.
So, I have to ask myself this question; if this chapter is about Dilsey, why is it that the part about Benjy sticks out the most to me? Why is this episode the most interesting part of this chapter? I think the fact that it is so random, and crazy that it was grabbed my attention. It made me wonder why this slightest change would make Benjy react like this. Did it have significance, or was it just merely the idea that they were going the wrong way? We can really see here that it does not take much to send Benjy into an episode. However, I think there is definitely more behind why he went into his episode, but what that reason is I am not quite sure.
I must say I agree that we have learned nothing and that this chapter is a little different than the others… Fulkner writes in a different way than he normally does… why does he do this and why does he choose to show Benjy in a chapter that has been designated at Dilsey’s?? I think we all are just as perplexed as you are
Yeah, that part with Benjy intrigued me as well. But I think that it’s important that you mention that it’s so random. When you think about it– isn’t the book really random? I mean things happen and they have consequences, but the rules the parents set up for the children and how to children react it’s all so wierd.
And to go even further, Benjy just comlains about minor things or anything relating to Caddy. Look at what make Quentin goe off the deep end (sorry for the pun) or the stuff that makes Jason angry.
I’d rather deal with Benjy.
Yeah i agree with you, it was weird how Dilsey is narrating this chapter yet it seems to mostly be about Benjy and he does in fact stand out to me the most. I honestly thought that Caddy would be the last one to narrate, i found it weird to eventually be Dilsey
The way Faulkner writes this chapter threw me off as well, and kept my attention. As if the narrator of the story kind of jumped into the story right about when it was going to end. Who was this narrative? Why does it matter, especially since the other chapters were self narrated?
Also, the whole thing with Benjy was a bit complicated. With all of the mess that he has to deal with, why does the direction he goes in make him snap?
I would have to agree like if this chapter is about Dilsey why not let her be the narrator? Why mention the episode? What is the episode’s importance??? Just a few questions to ponder!
